Observatory of the Economy of Architecture
The Observatory of Architecture Economics, a tool for knowledge and monitoring of the economic sector of architecture, aims to better understand the realities and changes in the architecture sector, cultural and creative industry under the Ministry of Culture.

Presentation of the Observatory
Supporting academic and economic actors in the architecture sector is a major challenge for the Ministry of Culture, in charge of cultural and creative industries, in order to ensure the sustainability of a sector of cultural activity of general interest and high added value, to better support its businesses and to secure the professional trajectories of young people in training within the 20 national graduate schools of architecture, public institutions under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture.
The Observatory of Architecture Economics is a partnership body dedicated to the knowledge of the sector, its evolutions and its perspectives. Chaired by the Ministry of Culture, which provides the general secretariat, the Observatory brings together stakeholders in the architecture sector as well as the ministries in charge of housing, environment, economy and finance, or Europe and Foreign Affairs.
Through collaboration and the pooling of their knowledge, the actors of the architecture sector, private and public, the research world and the Ministry of Culture will be able to build a shared and prospective vision of the architecture economy.
The Observatory aims to pool, produce and disseminate knowledge of the economic sector of architecture by mobilizing all its stakeholders, professionals in practice, educational and research structures in architecture, dissemination structures and researchers related to the economic sector of architecture.
Each partner of the observatory is encouraged to share its knowledge and participate in its development.
To this end, the Observatory conducts studies, collects data to better understand the economic sector of architecture, monitor changes and create the conditions for shared diagnostics on the challenges to be met by the sector.
Knowledge of the architecture economic sector will focus on:
- the socio-demography of architecture professionals;
- the strategy of architecture companies;
- training and access to employment;
- the internationalization of the profession.
Focusing on the economic dimension, the Observatory will thus seek to better understand the fields of activity of architecture professionals, their businesses, their socio-cultural characteristics and theirand their skills to improve and develop the employability of architecture students and the activities of practicing professionals.
In particular, it will help to better identify initial and continuing training needs.
It will endeavour not to limit knowledge of the sector at the national level by developing territorial and international approaches.
The tasks of the Observatory are:
- the collection, production, analysis, dissemination and exploitation of data on the architecture sector relating to the socio-demography of the sector, architectural offers and activities, business structures and models, training and access to employment, and the internationalization of architecture;
- qualitative and quantitative studies that shed light on the challenges of the architecture sector;
- the development and construction of periodic indicators to measure and analyse developments in the architecture sector at regular intervals;
- the accompaniment and financial support of research work on the economy of architecture. The Observatoire de l'économie de l'architecture may agree on study and research programmes with any public or private body;
- Dissemination and enhancement of the observatory’s work.
Placed with the Minister of Culture, the Observatory of the economy of architecture aims to bring together institutions and actors involved in the field of architecture or who can contribute to the provision of data, studies and analyses in this field.
To fulfil its tasks, the Observatory has a steering committee, a scientific council and thematic committees.
The members of the Steering Committee are represented on the thematic committees by persons nominated by name.

Annual day of the Observatory
The annual day of the Observatory of the architecture economy mobilizes all stakeholders in the architecture sector (professionals, researchers, teachers, students, journalists, etc.), as well as partner ministries.
This event has two objectives:
- present a summary of the work of the thematic committees (studies, surveys, indicators, etc.), carried out or planned;
- propose a forward-looking vision of the sector’s major challengeswith an opening to the world of architectural research.
