Archaeological research, like all scientific fields, has been confronted for several decades with the arrival of new technologies, such as LIDAR technology, which has made great strides in identifying and studying remains on large areas covered by forests.
This current topic, on the contribution of new technologies to archaeology, will be one of the themes developed during the 7the edition of the cross-border archaeological days, organized by the DRAC Grand Est – Ministry of Culture (France), the Landesamt für Denkmalpflege (Regional Office for the Conservation of Historic Monuments) of Baden-Württemberg (Germany) and the Laying Foundations Research (archaeological investigation) of the Canton of Basel-Stadt (Switzerland).
7e editions of the "Cross-border archaeological days of the Upper Rhine Valley"
The Upper Rhine is a common living area for its French, German and Swiss inhabitants. Over the past twenty years, many cross-border projects in very different fields have thus emerged within this Franco-German-Swiss space.
It is in this context that the Regional Archaeological Service of the DRAC Grand Est, the Landesamt für Denkmalpflege of Baden-Württemberg and the Primaires Bodenforschung of the Canton of Basel-City wanted to promote the emergence of a network of scientific and heritage cooperation on the scale of the Rhine area.
The cross-border archaeological days organized in Colmar, on Friday, November 20 and Saturday, November 21, 2026, are the manifestation of this collaboration between archaeologists from both sides.
They will provide an opportunity to present the results and progress of trinational projects and highlight some key operations within the Rhine area.
- Friday, November 20, 2026, will be dedicated to the main topic "Contributions and use of new technologies in archaeology" ;
- On Saturday, November 21, 2026, submissions will be made regarding the results of current research.
