The Label "Maisons des Illustres" of the Ministry of Culture is awarded after the opinion of the Regional Heritage and Architecture Commission transmitted to the Regional Prefect, on proposal of the DRAC. It highlights the places that perpetuate the memory of personalities who have distinguished themselves in the political, social, cultural and artistic history of France.
Labeled on June 13, 2023, then opened there the visit in September to the general public, the Maison Gainsbourg celebrated this distinction Tuesday, April 2, 2024 in the presence of Mrs Rachida Dati, Minister of Culture, Mrs Charlotte Gainsbourg, his son Ben Attal and Mr. Laurent Roturier, Regional Director of Cultural Affairs of Île-de-France.
On the occasion of the 96e anniversary of the birth of Serge Gainsbourg, this recognition highlights the capital importance of his work and the 5 bis rue de Verneuil in the French cultural heritage.
Both a place of inspiration and work, which has received among its walls illustrious guests and sheltered a family life, this small town house of 130m2 is an integral part of the work of Serge Gainsbourg. The "5 bis" is an important place both in his personal life and for the development of his career, and has been preserved intact by Charlotte Gainsbourg after her father’s death more than 32 years ago.
The historic house of Serge Gainsbourg is visited thanks to an original soundtrack, composed of new sound archives, created by Soundwalk Collective in collaboration with Charlotte Gainsbourg. Based on a technology and a spatialized sound developed by Usomo, this sound course was made in partnership with the National Music Centre and with the support of the Ministry of Culture.
The Maison Gainsbourg joins a network of more than 45 Maisons des Illustres in Paris, driven by the same issues of transmission to new generations.
Maison Gainsbourg is pleased to have shared this event with other Ile-de-France cultural institutions recently labeled "Maisons des Illustres", such as the workshop of the painter Alfred Manessier in Emancé (Yvelines) and the castle of Jean-Claude Brialy in Monthyon (Seine-et-Marne).
