On the occasion of the millennium of the annexation of the county of Dreux to the crown of France, the Fondation Saint-Louis, owner of the royal domain of Dreux, classified as a historical monument on 12 December 1977, joined forces with the DRAC Centre-Val de Loire to mark the event with the holding of a multidisciplinary symposium on 16 and 17 June 2023.

Like the domain of Randan (Puy-de-Dôme), the royal domain of Dreux is one of the historic properties linked to Louis-Philippe which deserves to be better known beyond its role as necropolis. The recent deposit of a collective research project (PCR) will allow the study of the so-called tower of Dannemarche, or more broadly to reconsider the entire site and its history in connection with the city. At the same time, the work carried out for several years by the regional conservation of historical monuments to inventory the movable objects related to the life of the estate and the memories of the Orléans family, allowed to propose, In May 2022, a ranking for historical monuments, of two movable sets, one of which will be attached to perpetual remains.

The bases of the studies posed, it appeared necessary for the Saint-Louis Foundation and the DRAC Centre-Val de Loire to deliver the first elements of this investigation between archives and materiality, to researchers, amateurs and specialists, from the archaeology of buildings to the history of art in all its specialties (architecture, decorative arts, painting, stained glass and gardens, etc.). The aim of this symposium is to shed light on a site whose historic thickness is largely underestimated and to stimulate new surveys and research.
