National theatres
The Comédie-Française, the Théâtre national de l'Odéon-Théâtre de l'Europe, the Théâtre national de la Colline and the Théâtre national de Strasbourg are, together with the Théâtre national de Chaillot and the Théâtre national de l'Opéra Comique, the six national theatres. Pillars of public policy in favor of drama, dance for Chaillot and opera for L'Opéra comique, these major emblematic stages of the French performing arts are public institutions under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture (Directorate-General for Artistic Creation).
The Comédie-Française Its mission is to represent its repertoire and ensure its national and international influence. It ensures the continuity of a troupe of actors that includes members, gathered in the society of French actors, and residents. The repertoire of the Comédie-Française consists of French and foreign plays, both ancient and contemporary, which are received by the reading committee. The shows are represented alternately in its historic hall, the Richelieu Room. The Comédie-Française also has two other performance stages in Paris: the Théâtre du Vieux Colombier (6th arrondissement de Paris) and the Studio-Théâtre (Carrousel du Louvre). Eric Ruf has been its general administrator since August 4, 2014.
Odeon National Theatre – Theatre of Europe Its mission is to develop theatrical creation by presenting the widest and most diverse audience of works belonging to the classical and contemporary repertoire, French or foreign. It works specifically for the support and dissemination of European theatre. It has two permanent stages: Salle de l'Odéon (6th arrondissement of Paris) and Berthier workshops (17th arrondissement de Paris). Stéphane Braunschweig has been Director since 13 January 2016.
National Theatre of the Hill (20th arrondissement de Paris) has the mission to develop theatrical creation by presenting works from the classical and contemporary repertoire, French or foreign. He is committed to developing the representation of contemporary writing. Wajdi Mouawad has been the director since April 6, 2016.
The National Theatre of Strasbourg Its mission is to present theatrical works but also to train in the performing arts at its École supérieure d'art dramatique (ESAD). The only national theatre in the region, it occupies a singular place in the landscape of live performance. Caroline Guiela Nguyen has been its director since 1 September 2023.
