Museéofile, the directory of museums in France
Museéofile is the official directory of museums in France. The data are available on POP, an open heritage platform and on data.culture.gouv.fr.
A reference directory
More than 1,200 museums benefit from the designation «Musée de France» within the meaning of the Heritage Code.
The French Museum Service, Directorate-General for Heritage, Ministry of Culture, has established a national reference base for these museums. It is possible to query this database using different criteria, such as the region, the department, the municipality, the name of the museum or the nature of the collections (archaeology, ethnology, etc.).
An open data set
The public, freely reusable data in this directory are online on data.culture.gouv.fr.
The reusable dataset in the French Museum Directory was completely updated (January 20, 2022) from the harmonized data in December 2021.
Updated content: December 2021 alignment
During the last quarter of 2021, the Bureau de la diffusion numérique des collections (Service des musées de France) ensured a general increase in the quality of the data in this directory.
Photography
The photographs, often of poor quality, of the buildings, were replaced by photographs from the official site of the museum, Facebook, and, exceptionally, other sources. If this photograph does not suit you and you wish to substitute another one, please contact us.
Contents
The contents have been harmonised, particularly in form. For example, since this directory is intended for all audiences, acronyms and acronyms have been systematically developed. Some of the content, which is particularly poor, has been enriched by information published on the museum’s official website.
Labels
End 2021:
- 52 museums were awarded the label Maison des Illustres,
- 12 of the label Outstanding contemporary architecture,
- 18 of the label Remarkable garden,
- 9 of the label National domain.
These labels are searchable in the “Museum Category” field.
Protection and interconnection
For the 539 buildings protected under the Historical Monuments, links to the base Mérimée have been integrated.
The museum’s presence in a remarkable Heritage Site is being systematically verified, which again leads to the creation of a link to the Mérimée base.
