The Service des musées de France is one of the four departments of the Direction générale des patrimoines. It carries the museum policy of the Ministry of Culture, in close connection with the regional directorates of cultural affairs (DRAC). It is based on the network of museums in France and professional associations.

The label «Exhibition of National Interest» was created by the Ministry of Culture in 1999 to highlight and support remarkable exhibitions organized by museums in France outside Paris. They highlight themes that reflect the richness and diversity of the collections of museums in France.

> Free permanent collections for 18-25 year olds in national museums
Since 4 April 2009, the permanent collections of national museums have been free of charge for young people under 26 years of age who are nationals of the European Union. This measure is part of the Ministry of Culture’s policy of cultural democratization.
