What is the label «Architecture contemporaine remarquable»?

The label «Remarkable contemporary architecture» is created by the law of 7 July 2016 on the freedom of creation, architecture and heritage. This label succeeds the label «Patrimoine du XXe siècle», created in 1999 and now disappeared. It points out buildings and productions less than 100 years old that are not protected under the Historical Monuments.
The aim is to to show the interest of recent constructions that everyone can inhabit and frequent, to make the link between the ancient heritage and the current architectural production, to encourage their reuse by adapting them to the expectations of the citizen (ecological, memorial, societal, economic, etc.).

How is the «Outstanding Contemporary Architecture» label awarded?

The label is awarded by decision of the Prefect of Region, after examination of the application by the Regional Committee of Heritage and Architecture.
The eligibility criteria are plural:

  • the singularity of the work;
  • the innovative or experimental nature of architectural, urban, landscape or technical design;
  • the notoriety of the work;
  • exemplarity of the work in participation in public policy;
  • the manifest value of the work because of its membership in a recognized architectural movement or ideas;
  • membership of a group or a work for which the author has national or local recognition.

The awarding of the label commits the owner to inform the competent authorities about his intention to carry out the work, prior to its completion.

What are the advantages of the «Outstanding contemporary architecture» label?

The advantages of the label are:

  • Mention in the communication documents distributed by the Ministry of Culture, especially on the occasion of the National Days of Architecture;
  • Possibility of obtaining specific road signs bearing the logo, according to the same process as the buildings protected as historical monuments;
  • Authorization to use the label and its logo on all communication and signage documents;
  • Technical assistance to adapt to new uses the labelled works undergoing transformations so that the initial qualities of the good are preserved during the works;
  • No servitude of public utility to be published in the department of land advertising; the owner of the labelled property retains the free enjoyment of his property but is responsible for informing the prefect of region in case of transfer of property.

How to apply?

The request for labelling may be made by the owner or by any private or public person having an interest in it (architect, successor-in-law of the architect, association, collectivity, etc.).
