What is the label «Maisons des Illustres»?
The label “Maisons des Illustres” was created on 13 September 2011. Through this distinction, the Ministry of Culture wishes to to highlight the places whose vocation is to preserve and transmit the memory of the women and men who have distinguished themselves in the political, scientific, social and cultural history of France. Present in all metropolitan areas as in Overseas, these Houses draw a real cartography, both unusual and close, of the places where the history of our country was shaped. These places show how the heritage is a living territory, how it is nourished by the personality and sensitivity of those who left their mark on it and inhabited it. The “Maisons des Illustres” bring together places of memory to better connect local and national history, intimacy and collective.
