Regional Archaeology Service
The Regional Archaeology Service lists the archaeological heritage in Normandy, scientifically and technically controls archaeological excavation operations and works to promote the results obtained.
The Regional Archaeology Service (SRA) is responsible for the census of archaeological heritage and its protection, the scientific and technical control of research and the promotion of scientific results. Finally, it provides assistance and advice in the event of a movable and real estate discovery of interest to archaeology. Its tasks are thus largely defined in terms of the Heritage Code.
With the updating of the computerized and geo-referenced archaeological map, it ensures that heritage protection is taken into account in urban planning documents, in the form of information maps or archaeological zoning. It informs municipalities about the presence of archaeological sites, for example by bringing it to the attention. It investigates land development files under the Urban Planning Code and the Environmental Code, where the latter are likely to concern buried or above ground remains.
In the field of preventive archaeology, the service shall give reasons for decisions which may give rise to prescriptions for diagnosis, excavations, conservation or technical modifications made to the current construction project. He conducts the examination of diagnostic reports and writes the scientific specifications after having requested the opinion of the Interregional Commission for Archaeological Research (CIRA) for the excavation prescriptions.
In the field of programmed archaeology, he reviews archaeological research, instructs the scientific programming of research in collaboration with researchers of research organizations (CNRS, university, communities) and volunteers. It investigates grant applications for archaeological research.
At the end of excavation operations or after incidental discoveries, he is responsible for ensuring the conservation of the remains placed in the existing departmental excavation depots and to regulate the ownership of the collections after studies.
The service also ensures the dissemination of the results of excavations undertaken in the region through the publication of the annual regional scientific review and support for the writing and publishing of articles and monographs or synthesis works. He also participates in cultural mediation activities by supporting exhibition projects and writing books.
