The missions of the Regional Archaeological Service in Nouvelle-Aquitaine
Programmed archaeology
Programmed archaeology enriches scientific knowledge through study programs initiated by researchers. Under the authority of the Regional Prefect, scheduled excavations may be undertaken and benefit from subsidies Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs. The SRA prepares the research programming, then provides scientific oversight and monitoring of authorized excavations.
Preventive archaeology
The main activity of the SRA, preventive archaeology focuses on the preservation of traces of human occupation, since they are threatened by any type of public or private development. The SFA builds on the knowledge gathered in the national archaeological map (more than 73,000 archaeological entities in Nouvelle-Aquitaine) to determine the appropriateness of a preventive archaeology operation.
A diagnosis makes it possible to verify the potential of the soil and the state of conservation of the remains. If the diagnosis is positive, an excavation will be prescribed to save by the study the historical information contained by the field.
Conservation movable archaeological property
The Regional Archaeological Service of the DRAC Nouvelle-Aquitaine leads the policy of conservation of collections from excavations, of which it manages the archives. These collections are available, on request from the SRA, in the Centres for Conservation and Archaeological Studies (CCE) , spread over the neo-aquitan territory, in Pessac, Certes-et-Graveyron, Campagne, Limoges and Poitiers.
Valorisation and transmission of archaeology
In close cooperation with local authorities, the SRA Nouvelle-Aquitaine works to highlight outstanding sites and archaeological collections, including:
• The National Museum of Prehistory in the Dordogne (24);
• The Gallo-Roman museum site of Vesunna in Périgueux (24);
• The Fâ Museum in Barzan in Charente-Maritime (17);
• The Gallic Sanctuary of Tintignac in Naves, Corrèze (19);
• The Neanderthal Museum of Man at La Chapelle-aux-Saints in Corrèze (19);
• The Museum of Aquitaine in Bordeaux (33);
• The Museum of Lake Sanguinet in the Landes (40);
• The Tumulus of Bougon, in Deux-Sèvres (79);
• The Museum of Civaux in Vienna (86);
• The thermal baths of Chassenon on the borders of the Charente (16) and Haute-Vienne (87).
DRAC Nouvelle-Aquitaine supports scientific mediation structures such as Cap'Archéo, the Regional Centre for Arts and Cultural Education (PREAC) for archaeology, and Interpretation of Prehistory (PIP), a public institution for cultural cooperation, of which the State is a founding member, located in the Vézère valley in Eyzies-de-Tayac (24).
The DRAC supports scientific and financial publications, symposiums and exhibitions, as well as actions to promote archaeology to the greatest number of audiences.
Dissemination of the Regional Scientific Review
Each year, the regional scientific review (BSR) coordinated by the DRAC offers a complete operational overview of the activity, practices and results of archaeology in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. This overall vision, unique at the regional level, is the result of the involvement of many actors from the entire research community, as well as many institutions.
