The work of the Garros in Occitanie (1860-1930) - The influence of a Bordeaux architectural firm (Dec. 2021)
The activity of the Garros, a dynasty of Bordeaux architects, spans more than a century and is a fundamental example for the study of architecture. It testifies to the various influences that can be experienced by men of art linked by a dual family and professional affiliation. The contribution of this dynasty still too little known at the national level has greatly enriched the regional heritage.
The production of the Garros begins in the middle of the 19the century with the foundation of the agency by Michel Louis Garros in 1861 and their activities end in the last quarter of the 20e century. The professional practice of the various members of this dynasty bears witness to a fertile architectural period, both for the construction projects and the technical innovations adopted, as for the magnificence and luxury of the achievements. A product of his time, Michel Louis Garros is an eclectic architect, drawing inspiration from the forms of the past. If the neo-Renaissance is very common in his work, he is interested in medieval art whose stylistic characteristics he reuses in what the Anglo-Saxons call the Gothic Revival.
The considerable budgets allocated by their sponsors, together with the entrepreneurial genius of these architects, are examined here, in particular through the prism of wine castles, and more particularly those made in Biterrois and Narbonnais. Between 1880 and 1930, in the Great Plain of Biterrose and Narbonnaise, the Garros dynasty, with several generations of architects, built no less than eleven castles and restored twenty-nine. It also built or refurbished thirty-three mansions, almost all located in Béziers. The castles of Libouriac (1885), Saint-Geniès-de-Monestrol (1884-1896, 1923-1925), Le Terral (1895-1910) and Valmirande (1893-1907) reflect the creativity of these architects and make it possible to appreciate their originality.
