French and French languages
Since 1996, the Ministry of Culture and Communication has combined the promotion of French, plurilingualism and the promotion of regional languages in a single policy.
Implementation of this policy is the responsibility of the General delegation of the French language and the languages of France | DGLFLF, relayed to the regions by the regional cultural affairs departments | Drac.
The "French language and languages of France" advisor’s mission is to promote:
- the presence of French and plurilingualism, placing French at the heart of action for linguistic diversity,
- mastery of the French language, a major factor in social cohesion,
- the languages of France and the regional languages, rich linguistic heritage.
Mastery of the French language is the subject of particular attention within the interdepartmental policy to combat illiteracy.
With regard to regional languages, the service helps structuring projects for the knowledge, enhancement and conservation of the Occitan linguistic heritage.
The Drac relays actions at national level such as the French Language and Francophonie Week and manifestation Tell me ten words.
