As part of the expansion of the Pyrénia ZAC, in the immediate vicinity of the Tarbes-Ossun aerodrome, a vast operation of archaeological monitoring (diagnostics and excavations) has been implemented since 2016.
The site was the seat of several aeronautical factories before being requisitioned by the German authorities from November 1942. A Luftwaffe pilot training school was established in 1943. A system of fortifications and defences was then set up all around the aerodrome (trenches, shelters, firing stations, etc.). The occupation troops left the site in August 1944, not without having sabotaged much of their facilities. The destruction of the German military archives and the rapid restoration of post-war land left little trace of this imposing defensive system.
Archaeological investigations now allow us to understand this relatively recent but largely unknown episode in our history.
