The objective of this operation is to test the relevance of this method of investigation in the study of the condition of the decorations, on an area of the monument difficult to access, which reaches up to 81 meters in height.
A security perimeter has been set up throughout the aerial evolution of the drone.
The intervention was supervised by the Departmental Unit of Architecture and Heritage of the Marne (UDAP) of the DRAC Grand Est, department in charge of the maintenance of the cathedral of Reims, in the presence of the head of the service and Architect of the buildings of France. The drone will be piloted by the Coanus building company.

Less expensive, faster and lighter to implement than traditional methods (nacelle, scaffolding...), drone inspection is now among the tools of watch, control and analysis used for the maintenance and restoration of historic monuments: building surveys, health inspections, photographic campaigns, 3D scanning...
If the drone was already used punctually, to complete a study prior to the restoration (on the floor of the large rose), it is on the other hand the first time that it is used, by the DRAC Grand Est, as part of a health inspection under the annual maintenance campaigns of the Reims Cathedral.
The results of these investigations will allow either to take the sanitary measures adapted to the preservation of the facade decorations or, according to the conclusions, to launch additional studies.
