Musical creation and dissemination organizations
The Opéra national de Paris
The Paris Opera is an institution of national and international reference for its lyrical, musical and choreographic policy. Public institution of the Ministry of Culture and Communication, its main mission is to make accessible to the greatest number of works of lyrical and choreographic heritage, to promote the creation and representation of contemporary works, to participate in the development of lyrical and choreographic art in France and to present shows both in Paris and in the provinces and abroad, and to strive to disseminate its productions by audiovisual means and in particular digital.
The Opéra national de Paris has two halls, the Palais Garnier (opened since 1875) and the Opéra Bastille (inaugurated in 1989), which allow it to alternate performances and increase the annual number of performances. In addition, as part of its training and teaching mission, the Paris Opera contributes, through the Academy, to the training and development of young professional directors and performers, the training and development of singers and conductors and ensures the excellence of the training of ballet dancers through its dance school located in Nanterre.

The National Theatre of the Comical Opera
The Opéra Comique was created during the reign of Louis XIV in 1714. It is one of the oldest theatrical and musical institutions in France with the Paris Opera (formerly the Royal Academy of Music) and the Comédie-Française. By decree of 20 November 2004, the State conferred on the Théâtre national de l'Opéra-Comique the status of an industrial and commercial public institution (EPIC), and assigned to it a double mission: the production and distribution of lyrical works and performances, in the direction of the widest audience; highlighting the diversity of expressions, from baroque opera to contemporary creation, and the historical repertoire of the Opéra-Comique, marked by the place of French opera.
The Théâtre national de l'Opéra Comique pursues a policy of collaboration with other lyrical and musical structures in France or abroad and also presents shows on tour.
Completely renovated after 22 months of work, the Salle Favart reopened in spring 2017 to allow the Théâtre national de l'Opéra Comique to fully develop its artistic and cultural project.

The Philharmonie de Paris
With several concert halls, a museum, a media library and many educational spaces, the Philharmonie de Paris is a new project.
The name "Philharmonie de Paris" includes the musical activities that take place in two adjoining and distinct buildings:
- The Cité de la musique (Philharmonie 2), designed by the architect Christian de Portzamparc and inaugurated in 1995, includes two concert halls (900 and 250 seats), a Music Museum and a Media Library;
- Philharmonie 1, designed by architect Jean Nouvel and opened to the public in January 2015, includes a large concert hall (2,400 seats), several rehearsal rooms, educational spaces and temporary exhibitions.
The Philharmonie de Paris is an exceptional architectural ensemble within the Parc de la Villette, while its resident training and innovative artistic project contribute to make it a unique cultural hub in the world promoting the appropriation of music by audiences.
The establishment offers a powerful tool to serve national and international symphonic groups, which did not find in Paris equivalent to the large modern concert halls of international capitals. Beyond the classical repertoire, its programming is open to contemporary music and world music, as well as dance.
The Philharmonie de Paris also has 20 years of experience in teaching. Since its inauguration in 1995, the Cité de la musique has indeed deployed activities for all, ensuring a diversity of perspectives that integrates non-European cultures and popular forms. The new establishment continues while amplifying this policy of education and cultural democratization.
With this wealth, the Philharmonie de Paris has given itself the task of rethinking the place of the concert, integrating it into the heart of an open system, promoting all forms of educational or playful appropriation. Located in a developing East Paris, a link between the capital and its surroundings, it is a real gathering place for all audiences.

National operas in the regions
In addition to the Opéra national de Paris and the Théâtre national de l'Opéra-Comique, the state supports a network of fifteen opera houses in the region. All these houses carry out a common mission consisting in bringing to life and presenting to the public, throughout the territory, the lyrical and choreographic works of the repertoire and creation. They also regularly host independent musical ensembles that, through their aesthetic specializations, enrich the programming by proposing baroque or contemporary works. They are also developing an arts and cultural education policy to promote access to programming for all audiences.
Five of them are distinguished by the label «opéra national en région» in particular because of the internal artistic teams they have (ballet, choir, orchestra) to develop through co-production their national and international influence. The network of operas in the region offers on average every season around 1,750 performances for more than one million spectators.

Permanent orchestras in the regions
The politics of orchestras in France
Implemented alongside local authorities in the late 1960s, the State’s policy in favour of permanent orchestras makes it possible to sustain, throughout the national territory, symphonic works of heritage and contemporary repertoire and to make them accessible to as many people as possible.
1. Orchestras in Ministry of Culture institutions
The Orchestre de Paris is part of the public institution Cité de la musique-Philharmonie de Paris. The Ensemble Intercontemporain, created by Pierre Boulez, is in residence in the establishment and is dedicated to the dissemination of contemporary creation.
The two symphonic groups of Radio France, the Orchestre national de France, the first permanent symphonic orchestra created in France, and the Orchestre philharmonique de Radio France, complete this diversity in the Paris region.
Permanent orchestras integrated into an opera house complete the national landscape. Their main mission is to interpret the works of the repertoire and lyrical creation. The orchestra of the Opéra national de Paris provides the largest number of curtain-raisers at the Opéra-Bastille and the Palais Garnier.
2. A national network that irrigates the territory: national orchestras in the regions, some of which are integrated into opera houses
About forty permanent symphony groups - three of which are integrated into opera houses in the region (Bordeaux-Aquitaine National Orchestra, Toulouse Capitol National Orchestra, Montpellier National Orchestra) ensure symphonic and lyrical missions and allow the meeting of works and inhabitants. Fourteen groups are labeled “Orchestre national en région”.
The missions of permanent orchestras are divided into five main axes: creation and production, dissemination, relations with the public, partnerships and professional issues affecting in particular the recruitment and integration of young people.
These groups perform the works of the repertoire and of creation at the rate of three thousand curtain-raisers per season and gather more than two million spectators per year.
The label "Orchestre national en région"
The structures labeled «national orchestra in the region» constitute a national network of reference in the field of symphonic music for the enhancement and renewal of repertoires, the diversity of forms, aesthetics and their interpretations. They participate in the structuring of orchestral and musical life in the national territory and pay particular attention to diversity, particularly through the works presented, accompanied artists and audiences, respect for the objectives of parity as well as the consideration of cultural rights, territorial equity, for the development of access and participation of the greatest number in cultural life.
Sixteen formations are labeled «national orchestra in the region»
Vocal Arts Centres
The Vocal Art Centres are a network of structures that the Ministry of Culture has distinguished for their commitment to vocal art, both in terms of production and artistic education. Today there are six, they shine on their territory of establishment but also at the national level, even international. They work to promote vocal art in all its forms: in its choral dimension, soloist or chamber musician and without particular aesthetic prism. They reinforce essential missions in this field, such as transmission and professional integration, artistic education actions, the outreach of the repertoire, particularly a cappella, and the sharing of resources.

National Centres for Musical Creation
The National Centres for Musical Creation (CNCM) work to renew musical forms and languages. They support the writing and design of new works. They also pursue research, with the aim of experimenting and developing new tools and approaches to musical creation.
Each year, the 8 CNCM welcomes in residence a hundred composers, performers and artists of various disciplines engaged in a creative project. They provide recording and editing studios, equipment and high-level technical and musical assistance.
They participate in the dissemination of works through the organization of festivals or in co-production with the venues for the purpose of national and international outreach.

National Drama Centres
The National Drama Centres (NDCs) are emblematic institutions of the policy of dramatic decentralization conducted by the State for seventy years (the first five centres were created between 1946 and 1952).
The national scenes
Bringing together the old houses of culture (early 60s), cultural action centers (from 1967) and cultural development centers (from 1975), the network of national stages was unified by this label in 1991. There are now 74 of them spread throughout the national territory, the vast majority in medium-sized cities with a population of 50 to 200,000.
Current music scenes (SMAC)
The current music scenes (SMAC) have the mission to broadcast the current music in their widest acceptance and all their diversity. They mainly program Pop Rock music and assimilated but also song and jazz, electronic music, urban music and more rarely world music or traditional music.
