While they could guide professionals in their choice of conservation method(s) and replacement/substitution stone(s), and help historians and archaeologists with their dating and interpretations, data on the French historic heritage stones and their original quarries remain fragmented and inaccessible.
Faced with this problem, the BRGM (Bureau of Geological and Mining Research), the CICRP (Interregional Centre for Heritage Conservation and Restoration) and DRACOccitania and Provence-Alpes-Côte-d'Azur have developed the PierreSud observatory with two objectives:
- Improve the state of knowledge on the stones of the historical heritage of the two regions by carrying out original projects on the stones of the heritage and the recovery/ compilation of new data regularly enriching a relational database dedicated.
- To make it easier for professionals, scientists and the general public to get to know the data available on heritage stones through the pierresud.brgm.fr website (currently being redesigned) which itself questions the database.
As part of this collaborative work, the DRAC Provence-Alpes Côte d'Azur has commissioned the BRGM and the CICRP to create panoramas of stones of historical monuments of the Region (by departments or boroughs). A more specific study was also carried out on the quarries of the Roya valley (Alpes-Maritimes).
