The choice of this plastic artist was for the LCdr of the evidence, both its practice is anchored both in the creation of temporal and spatial openings to modify the ways of seeing and interpreting our common history, but also in a marked interest for minimal forms, so present in the history of the institution.
For his original installation, the artist was nourished by the work of Claude Deschamps, architect at the origin of the Lainé warehouse, a former place of storage of colonial goods built between 1822 and 1824. Respectful of architectural harmony, Kapwani Kiwanga installs his work composed of blue monochrome string curtains between the arches of the nave. With this monumental creation, the artist gives us an experience in transparency and lightness.
In developing his project, Kapwani Kiwanga analyzed the foundations of LCdr and his pilotis system thanks to which Bordeaux prospered on the marshy soil of the banks of the Garonne. Echoing the water retention devices in the museum’s bedrock, Kapwani Kawanga made, as he put it, two “surgical incisions” in the nave floor, through which water flowing from the curtains seeps into the building. This highlighting of the link between the warehouse and the river also allows the art center to question its colonial past.
LCdr is 50 years old
In 2023, LCdr turns 50. 50 years dedicated to contemporary creation, which the institution celebrates on the occasion of two highlights in June and September. Always in search of innovative artistic practices in line with the challenges of their time, the CAPC deploys for five decades a dense and uninterrupted activity of exhibitions, performances and mediation projects with Bordeaux and Bordeaux, and a national and international audience. This emphasis on the dissemination of visual arts to a wide audience and the actions to support artistic creation pursued by LCdr were recognized in 2021 by the Ministry of Culture which awarded him the label Centre d'art contemporain d'intérêt national.
Throughout the year, LCdr revisits his story to better immerse himself in the future. The programme includes events, a major publication and exhibition in the nave of the Kapwani Kiwanga Art Museum.
