During the 2022-2023 school year, the Jeunes en librairie scheme in Île-de-France, run by DRAC Île-de-France, in collaboration with the Paris Librairies association and in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Youth, supports 100 projects throughout the Ile-de-France region. 38 projects take place within the Académie de Créteil (18 projects in Seine-Saint-Denis, 10 projects in Val-de-Marne and 10 projects in Seine-et-Marne).
The meetings organized between the Lycée des métiers de l'horticulture et du paysage Jeanne Baret de Montreuil and the bookseller Zeugma deal with a subject rarely treated "the book and the plant". Students from a class in CAP Florists and a class in CAP Métiers de l'Agriculture collaborated with the bookstore to create one of the windows around papyrus cuttings made by the students and books also selected by them.

A first meeting between the students and the bookseller was organized. This meeting allowed high school students to get to know each other, to wonder and to discover what it is to be a bookseller. In a second step, they were able to understand more widely the functioning of the book chain.

For a large number of students, this exchange within the Zeugma bookstore proved to be synonymous with the first discovery of the place. It was the first discovery in which the students were able to walk freely through the shelves and ask all kinds of questions to the booksellers, who showed kindness, listening and keen interest.

The students, most of whom had never been to their local bookshop and some of whom are disabled, were accompanied during this discovery process by two attentive teachers. They had, among other things, prepared a questionnaire to complete throughout this emotional moment. They finally left with papyrus cuttings to grow at home and the desire to return as quickly as possible to the Zeugma bookstore, to make their showcase and acquire the books of their choice. These students were also able to enjoy two meetings with the novelist Estelle-Sarah Bulle around her profession of autrice.
Young people in bookshops 2022-2023 for the Académie de Créteil in figures
The Youth in Bookshop projects are initiated by members of the educational community and book professionals, especially booksellers, and take the form of at least two meetings:
- the bookseller comes in class to present his profession, his bookshop and the other professions of the book chain
- A visit to the partner bookshop is organized, during which the students use Lire cheques in the amount of €25 per student, given by the Youth in bookshop scheme, for individual and personal purchases.
Books and reading are one of the main priorities of the State’s cultural policy. The Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs (DRAC) Île-de-France supports, in a global policy of accompaniment, all the actors of the book chain, from the author to the reader, to enhance the book and promote its access to the Ile-de-France territory.
The "Young people in bookshops" scheme is aimed at young middle school students, high school students and apprentices, and makes it possible to support projects carried out by pairs consisting of a school and an independent bookstore.
The second edition, for the 2022-2023 school year, is again enjoying increasing success with a 40% increase in supported projects, student beneficiaries, partner bookshops and public investment.
The "Young people in bookshops" scheme also allows students to acquire books through the distribution of Cheques Lire of €25 per young person, for personal use. The relationship with a bookseller is at the heart of each project and takes at least the form of two meetings: in class and in bookstores. For many young people, this is their first visit to a bookstore or their first visit without family support.
The choices made by the DRAC Île-de-France in cooperation with its operator "Paris Librairies" tend to respect the territorial balance, with particular attention to projects from schools located in the city’s political district (QPV) and in the Parisian crown: 37 projects take place in the Académie de Créteil, 49 in the Académie de Versailles and 13 in the Académie de Paris.
Particular attention has also been paid to the target audience of these projects, the students most in need. The quality of the mediation with the actors of the book (booksellers, publishers, artists, authors, illustrators, librarians...) is at the heart of the projects, which, on a cultural path logic, can usefully be enriched by meetings with other professionals in the world of books as well as practical workshops that put the public in contact with the book professions.
