Archaeology
In terms of archaeology, the DAC oversees the inventory, study, protection and conservation of archaeological heritage in the region. The Regional Archaeology Service is responsible for carrying out these missions within the DAC, in accordance with Book V of the Heritage Code.
The missions
- Research and evaluation of research
The Regional Archaeological Service carries out the policy of detection and study of the regional archaeological heritage.
It has two research modes: preventive archaeology and programmed archaeology.
The entire research is subject to a double scientific evaluation, that of the Regional Archaeological Service and that of the Territorial Commission for Archaeological Research (CTRA) of the overseas territories.
- The National Archaeological Inventory
The Regional Archaeological Service updates the National Archaeological Inventory (or National Archaeological Map) which collects and orders all available data relating to archaeological heritage: known archaeological sites, operations carried out, protective measures...
In constant evolution, the archaeological map restores a state of knowledge in a given territory. It is both a research tool for archaeologists and an archaeological heritage management tool.
- Protection of heritage
The Regional Archaeology Service provides information on archaeological heritage. It puts in place protection measures specific to archaeology and contributes to the development of protections managed by the other departments of the DAC.
The Regional Archaeology Service manages incidental finds and is empowered to initiate criminal proceedings in case of destruction of remains
- Heritage conservation
The Regional Archaeological Service is the recipient and responsible for the documentation resulting from the archaeological research: archaeological furniture, scientific documentation and operations reports.
It controls the classification and packaging of this documentation. It ensures the conservation, restoration and consultation of this documentation and ensures the application of the property regime specific to archaeological remains.
- Dissemination and exploitation
The regional archaeological service supports the scientific and cultural development of archaeological heritage. He participates every year in the National Archaeology Days and ensures the publication of the Regional Scientific Review. It supports research dissemination activities: publications, symposia, exhibitions.
