Since the introduction of the Vth Public ceremonies in France have undergone many profound changes.
In the first place, it is of course the place taken by the President of the Republic that supplants now as incarnation of the nation the constituted bodies, so much so that it is henceforth around his person that public State ceremonies are organized.
Secondly, they are undergoing a clear evolution due to media coverage: gradually they are, less organized for spectators – the physically present audience – than for viewers, who sometimes risk turning the ritual into a show.
Third, their evolution is linked to those of collective sensitivities: perception of death, desecration of politics, demand for transparency and proximity, which pose new constraints to organizers…
Finally, since the 1980s and the gradual integration of France into the European Union, they constitute a play of primary importance in the symbolic reaffirmation of the republican state caught between the own symbolic policies developed by local authorities and the European horizon, or even shaken by the identity fears that cross the country, sometimes tending to become ceremonies of collective reassurance.
The purpose of the day is to study these metamorphoses and the issues that underlie them not only in terms of what is said but also in terms of how they are staged – the two dimensions coming together to make the republican symbolism.
