7.The triptych says "of the Master of Mills": restoration in progress!
The restoration work of the triptych of Moulins continues in the restoration workshops of the Centre for Research and Restoration of Museums of France (C2RMF). For the rest of this column, particular attention is paid to surveys.
A meeting of the Scientific Committee took place on 12 January 2024 to present the first observations of the support and pictorial layer restorers, the investigations carried out on the polychromy of the frame and the tests of thinness of varnish of the panels.
The surveys carried out by the restorers confirmed the presence of an original polychromy under the golden decoration XIXe century and the physicochemical analyses carried out by the scientists of the C2RMF made it possible to study the stratigraphy and to characterize the materials. The question of the release of the original polychromy was therefore raised. Because of the importance of this decoration on the aesthetic rendering of the work and the problems of adhesion of the 19th century strata, the scientific committee validated its update.
Regarding the paint layer of the central panel, the varnish thinning tests were presented and validated by the scientific committee. The latter met again on February 12, 2024 and decided on the continuation of the operations in particular, to continue cleaning the paint layer by thinning.
During the last scientific committee in late February 2024, it was decided to continue cleaning and remove the overflowing repaints.
The results of ongoing investigations whose physico-chemical analyses have been and are regularly presented to the scientific committee in order to improve the knowledge of the work and respond to the problems of conservation and restoration of the work. The release of the polychromy of the XVIe century at the level of the frame was also exposed and confirms that the frame was designed from its origin in dialogue with the central panel.
