Between 1952 and 1954, André Devin and Yvan Bentz built the La Résidence building in Marseille, initiating a "wave" of report building construction in the city.
The Residence rises on nine levels, and is distinguished from the surrounding buildings by its glazed and off-centered elevator shaft, and the recessed treated angle, announcing a covered gallery. The two wings of the "L" are treated differently, for reasons of stylistic research, but also because of sun exposure. Thus, the north facade is treated in wobbly concrete and has a stone facing, which produces an opaque and very smooth appearance. This straightness is reinforced by bandeau windows. To the west, however, the projecting balconies and the plays of polychrome enliven the facade. A series of superimposed loggias ensures the transition with the adjoining building. The architects offer here a fine example of integration of the principles of modern and functionalist architecture to a regional urban realization.
