This year, the DRAC Hauts-de-France has chosen to honour one of its archival holdings, the audiovisual archives of Georges Jelski, filmmaker and archaeologist, who worked in the region from the 1970s to the 1990s.
In 2021, the Hauts-de-France Regional Archaeological Service saved this archive from destruction and thus allowed the donation and collection of 193 16mm film reels, 4 magnetic media and 14 soundbands.
This collection is exceptional for its quantity, but above all for the quality of the images and their good state of conservation, their original character and their valuable contribution from a scientific, archival and heritage point of view.
Thanks to a partnership between the Regional Archaeology Service and Archipop, an association dedicated to safeguarding and enhancing the audiovisual archives of the Hauts-de-France region, these materials have been digitizedthrough the Programme de Digitalisation et de Valorisation des contenus culturels proposed by the DRAC Hauts-de-France to ensure the preservation, accessibility and enhancement.
On June 9, 2023, as part of a round table organized jointly by Drac Hauts-de-France, Archipop and Le Fresnoy - Studio National des Arts Contemporains, entitled «Archaeology and Cinema, Stories of Gestures», this collection of unpublished archives is presented for the first time to the public in the form of the broadcast of a hook.
This first screening marks only the beginning of the adventures of Georges Jelski’s audiovisual archives, which will continue to be unveiled in future enhancement actions.
