4.Video - Archaeology of the landscape and the city of Châlons-en-Champagne through the urban heat network
The installation of a buried heat network gave rise to a first phase of direct preventive archaeological excavation (out of three) conducted, from 2 August 2021 to 22 June 2022, in the agglomeration of Châlons-en-Champagne (Marne) by INRAP on prescription of the DRAC Grand Est. The intervention revealed remains of the Roman road, an ancient necropolis, the medieval gate Saint-Jacques des XVe - XVIIIe s. and the enclosure of the XIIIe - XVIIIe s.

From 2 August 2021 to 22 June 2022, a first phase of direct preventive archaeological excavation (out of three) was conducted in the municipalities of Recy, Saint-Martin-sur-le-Pré and Châlons-en-Champagne (Marne) by Inrap on prescription from the Regional Archaeological Service of the Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs (DRAC) Grand Est.
The operation was carried out during the installation of the underground heat network by Engie Solutions. Its right-of-way covers part of the "Cloé Network" development route, approximately 4.6 km long, representing 26,000 m2. The width of the trench varies from 1.60 m to 2.20 m for a depth between 1.50 m and 3 m.
The expectations related to the archaeological context are rich and were confirmed during the intervention: the Roman way, the medieval gate Saint-Jacques des XVe - XVIIIe s. and the enclosure of the XIIIe - XVIIIe s. an ancient necropolis.
In addition, the intervention revealed ancient occupations. Its layout crosses different geological and geomorphological contexts (chalky slopes, dry valleys, old alluvial terraces, veneers of loess, etc.), the archaeological intervention thus makes it possible to document the evolution of landscapes for at least 17,000 years (geological and geomorphological study conducted by A. Gonnet, Inrap Grand Est).
