The Minister of Culture, Franck Riester, congratulates Philippe Quesne and his team on winning the prize for the best country pavilion, having succeeded in echoing the three themes of the 2019 edition of the Quadrennial: «Imagination, transformation, memory».
The French pavilion, Microcosm, created by stage designer and director Philippe Quesne, director of Nanterre-Amandiers, a national drama centre, was greeted on Tuesday 11 June by the jury of the Prague Quadrennial of Stage Design and Theatre Architecture, international event of reference in this field. The main theme of his project was to question the landscape, the reverie on a deserted island with installations-diorama that take the visitor into a life experience of an island microcosm, a setting conducive to fantasies, utopia and possibilities. More than 50 years after having won the most prestigious prize of the first edition of the Prague Quadrennial in 1967, France is rewarded in 2019 for the best pavilion.
France is also represented at the Prague Quadrennial by a team of apprentice scenographers, the «Ninth School», from eight higher education institutions.
For Franck Riester, "This award recognizes excellence in French scenography and illustrates the strength of artistic partnerships in Europe."
Philippe Quesne’s project was supported by ARTCENA (Centre national des arts du cirque, de la rue et du théâtre), which organizes and coordinates the French presence in Prague, with the support of the Institut français and the Institut français de Prague, and in partnership with La Maison Jean Vilar and the Union des scénographes.
