A mechanism for cultural democratization and the fight against social divisions, this operation makes it possible to raise awareness of heritage and history, outside of school time, among young people from working-class neighbourhoods..
A meeting with heritage
This year, 35,000 children and adolescents are expected in more than 130 sites throughout France: museums, archives, historical monuments, archaeological sites, cities and countries of art and history... New and playful forms of appropriation of heritage places are proposed to them, through artistic practices in the fields of live performance, plastic arts, digital arts and multimedia, and through exchanges on the history of the arts, drawing, music, dance, garden art and sports.
The diversity of events held throughout the territory reflects the inventiveness of cultural and youth professionals.
A formative cultural gesture
Young people are accompanied by mediators who, each year, reinvent these Portes du temps, in the framework of partnerships with the reception and life structures of young people - recreation centres, social centres, youth and cultural centres, Francas, rural homes. Designed for groups of children and youth, the scheme also concerns families, thanks to the “Ambassador Pass” which allows each young person to invite his family, becoming in turn a mediator of heritage.
Genesis of the manifestation
Initiated by the Ministry of Culture and Communication, Les Portes du temps is organized in partnership with the Ministry of the City, Youth and Sport and the Office of the General Commissioner for Equality of Territories within the framework of the common objectives for social cohesion, integration and access to culture for disadvantaged groups. Les Portes du temps is supported by the Regional Directorates for Cultural Affairs (DRAC), the Regional Directorates for Youth, Sports and Social Cohesion (DRJSCS) and the Departmental Directorates for Social Cohesion (DDCS), the support of the prefectures in terms of city policy, local authorities, the Centre des monuments nationaux (CMN), the Réunion des musées nationaux and the Grand Palais (Rmn-GP), the museums of France, and the various heritage institutions.
Since its creation in 2005, Les Portes du temps has welcomed more than 350,000 young people aged 4 to 18.
