Aurélie Filippetti, Minister of Culture and Communication, will open on Wednesday, November 27, 2013, the annual seminar of the Archives of France, which is being held this year in Marseille, from November 27 to 29, at the Palais du Pharo and MuCEM. An essential meeting of the Archives network in France, this seminar will bring together 170 people for three days at the initiative of the Directorate-General for Heritage/ Interdepartmental Service of the Archives of France. All the directors of the Departmental Archives, the heads of the main departments of the Municipal Archives, the directors and representatives of the National Archives and the “archives” advisors of the regional cultural affairs directorates will be present.
The theme chosen this year is that of «European and international issues»: the European issues of preservation and processing of individual data, as well as all the projects in progress of international cooperation, will be particularly addressed. A round table will bring together at MUCEM, on Thursday 28 November, six directors of National Archives of Mediterranean countries.
This seminar will also be an opportunity to discuss all the professional issues of the world of Archives. Among the workshops and conferences devoted to the cultural and scientific aspects of the craft, the commemoration of the First World War, carried by the recent success of the «Grande collecte» and through the digitization and indexing of the Poilus registries, will of course be in the spotlight. Participants will also discuss the digital evolution of their profession, illustrated by the ongoing projects of a European portal for access to archives and an interdepartmental platform for electronic archiving.
The Archives network in France – Archives nationales, départementales, communales – is made up of nearly 5,000 people, including 800 state employees. It has 3,500 linear kilometres of public records from the VIe century to the present day. In 2012, one million people were welcomed into the services of the French Archives, and more than two billion online pages were consulted on their websites, making all of these sites the largest historical resource base available in France.
