This DEPS study on the 175,000 students in artistic and cultural training in 2021, based on data from the Sise survey (Student Monitoring Information System) of the SIES (Departmental Statistical Service for Higher Education and Research), updates a previous publication of 2011 entitled «Artistic, cultural and communication training in 2009: 155,000 students in very diversified fields».
During the academic year 2021-2022, more than 175,000 students follow an artistic and cultural training in France, or 6% of the students enrolled in a higher education. These students are spread over 700 institutions that offer more than 2,500 courses and prepare to obtain more than 500 different diplomas, at the bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral level.
Students enrolled in higher artistic and cultural training account for 6% of the students in higher education.
TO REMEMBER:

- Students enrolled in higher artistic and cultural training account for 6% of the students in higher education. Most of them are enrolled in higher education (54%).
- Women are the majority (62% of the workforce, compared with 56% for all higher education).
- Students with a general baccalaureate are still more numerous than those from other baccalaureate series (68% of the total number).
- A third of those enrolled in higher cultural or artistic training study in Paris, 42% in Île-de-France.
In 700 establishments
- Higher education institutions, which make up the majority of students in artistic and cultural training, account for 59% of the private sector and 41% of the public sector.
- Two-thirds of registrants are in the public sector.
- Among the nine training areas observed:Visual arts have the highest number of students (30% of the total), followed by performing arts (15%) and architecture, planning and landscape (12%).
