Working for an eco-responsible and sustainable cultural digital transition
The digital transition must be a responsible and sustainable transition. It is imperative to systematize the consideration of ecological impact in the design, deployment and support of digital devices.
Digital technology is often seen as a substitute for polluting activities. It thus avoids the transportation and storage of cultural goods, the movement of spectators and technical teams, or the manufacture of paper and printing. Yet it also has a carbon footprint, especially since it is part of a logic of complementarity rather than substitution.
The cultural sector is proactive in the field of digital eco-responsibility. The challenge is to reconcile contradictory trends. The growth of uses and the development of new formats (8K, virtual reality, etc.) generate an increase in data traffic. At the same time, energy efficiency increases with constant traffic. The cultural sector plays an important role in the exchange of data on networks. It also plays a leading role in the introduction of innovations in use and equipment. The cultural sector therefore has a key role to play in the responsible and sustainable digital transition.
The ministry supports eco-responsibility initiatives through various mechanisms, including the call for projects Innovative Digital Services.
