The Army Museum
Created in 1905, the Musée de l'Armée is a museum of history, science and technology, fine arts and society. Within these collections from the military world, photography holds a special place with a rich collection of nearly 80,000 pieces of all supports and processes, ranging from 1845 to the present day.
Since 2009, the museum has pursued a dynamic and reasoned policy of acquisitions in the field of ancient and contemporary photography. The latter is organized around purchases or donations of photographic funds from photojournalists (Édouard Elias, Yan Morvan, José Nicolas, Emmanuel Ortiz, Michel Slomka) and plastic artists (Émeric Lhuisset, Sophie Ristelhueber, Lisa Sartorio), as well as commissions (Éric Bouvet on Afghanistan in 2009, Philippe de Poulpiquet on the Hôtel National des Invalides in 2020, Édouard Elias on special forces in the Sahel in 2022).
The photographic residence
For the inauguration of this new residence, the Musée de l'Armée offers a special place to international photographic creation. This initiative aims to support and reveal confirmed and emerging photographic talents, in a new setting and encouraging creation. The museum is thus an actor of support to the ecosystem of photography by developing its visibility in the panorama of heritage institutions in charge of the conservation and valorization of photography, enriching by the same process, the diversity of its heritage fund. This photographic residence also aims to introduce artists to the Musée de l'Armée, its missions and collections, by offering them privileged access.
The residence will focus on one or several axes proposed by the museum such as «The collections of the Musée de l'Armée», «The architecture of the Hôtel National des Invalides and its ecosystem», «The creation of the Musée de l'Armée de demain», “Life and Rhythms at the Army Museum”, and “The Armed-Nation Bond and the Awakening of the Citizen”.
