Intervene on a classified or registered movable object
Movable objects, whether movable or immovable by destination, the conservation of which is of public interest from the point of view of history, art, science or technology, may be classified as historic monuments (art. L. 622-1 of the Heritage Code) or, if they are of sufficient interest to make their preservation desirable, be inscribed as historic monuments (art. L. 622-20 of the Heritage Code).
About 300,000 movable objects are classified or listed as historical monuments: paintings, sculptures, goldsmiths, tapestries, textiles, furniture, instrumental heritage, rail, aeronautics, maritime, scientific, photographic...
Before any work is done on a listed or listed movable object, it is up to the owner to contact the State services in charge of historical monuments (the regional directions of cultural affairs - DRAC). Classified movable objects cannot be modified, repaired or restored without authorization issued by the regional prefect (DRAC). Modification, repair or restoration work on a listed movable object must be the subject of a prior declaration to the curator of antiques and works of art of the department two months before the start of the work.
Work on protected movable objects is carried out under the scientific and technical supervision of the State services in charge of historic monuments. In compliance with the international charters, the methodology of the intervention on a classified or inscribed movable object insists on the preliminary phase of essential studies (cleaning or consolidation tests, polychromy study, etc.) before any project of restoration or modification, in order to establish the appropriate recommendations for the choice of a reference state, according to the material history and knowledge of the constituent materials.
