The surroundings of historical monuments
The law of 7 July 2016 on the freedom of creation, architecture and heritage redefined the provisions applicable to the surroundings of historical monuments to make it a real tool of the policy in favor of cultural heritage.
Buildings which form a coherent whole with a historic monument or which are likely to contribute to its conservation or development are protected under the title of the surroundings.
The approach protection applies to buildings located within a so-called “delimited” perimeter, that is, a perimeter adapted to the specific challenges of each historic monument and each territory. These concerted and reasoned perimeters allow a greater visibility of heritage issues and a better appropriation and understanding of the approaches by the inhabitants.
In the absence of a defined perimeter, the approach protection applies to buildings located in the field of visibility of a historic monument less than 500 metres from it. These perimeters are intended to be transformed into delimited perimeters of the surroundings.
The works planned in the surroundings of the historical monuments are subject to prior authorization requiring the agreement of the architect of the Buildings of France. It ensures that the project does not affect the historic monument or the surroundings (link to works in the vicinity of MH).
