Historical monuments & heritage sites
This thematic site makes available to any public, owner, professional or user of the heritage, information relating to historical monuments, their approaches, the remarkable heritage sites, and the French property inscribed on the list of World Heritage unesco.
The pages of this thematic site allow you to read protection strategies and criteria and conservation andhistory of this essential public policy of the Ministry of Culture.
For public or private owners and all «users» of the heritage, the protection procedures and the steps to be taken in case ofintervention on a building, movable object or heritage site are summarised.
The actors heritage are presented, including:
- the National Heritage and Architecture Commission and the regional heritage and architecture commissions,
- the services of the State, in particular the regional directorates of cultural affairs,
- the partners : associations and foundations working in the field of heritage, private owners, prime contractors, companies and experts, etc.,
- training organizations that prepare for trades.
Finally a section documentation provides access to annual reports, guides and fact sheets, and publications that make it possible to disseminate useful tools for the preservation of historic monuments and heritage sites.
This thematic site is updated periodically by the Directorate of Historical Monuments and Heritage Sites under the Heritage Service of the Directorate-General for Heritage and Architecture.
What is a historical monument
A historical monument is a building or a movable object, protected (classified or registered) for its historical, artistic, architectural but also technical or scientific interest, in order to ensure its conservation, restoration and enhancement.

What is a remarkable heritage site?
A remarkable heritage site is a city, village or neighbourhood whose conservation, restoration, rehabilitation or enhancement is of public interest from a historical, architectural, archaeological, artistic or landscape perspective.
On the date of 1er January 2022, there are 44,920 buildings and more than 280,000 movable objects classified or listed as historic monuments. There are also over 965 remarkable heritage sites.
