Specialty : Ethnological expertise in intangible heritage
Objectives
The MASTER II Specialty «Ethnological expertise in intangible heritage» was created to meet the growing demands of actors (cities, regions, states, communities of countries, companies, associations, individuals, etc.) recognition, inventory and promotion of elements considered “heritage” but not “monumental”. For example traditions, know-how, aesthetic practices, oral performances, etc.
The complexity of mobilizing regional, national and international mechanisms (framed by the 2003 UNESCO Convention) requires the intervention of a body of experts, particularly in order to master the challenges of this new category, intangible cultural heritage.
This Master wants to train this body of experts and thus targets two types of audiences:
- of students in the human and social sciences (initial training) wishing to acquire the techniques and instruments enabling the assembly of files of heritage recognition and mediation of living culture;
- of socio-professional actors, confronted with these new heritage categories, and anxious to acquire the scientific tools of anthropology to better domesticate.
Terms of admission
Admission is on file. For students in initial training, a pre-anthropology training (Master I «Anthropology») is recommended to best benefit from the three specialty courses.

Objectives
The objective of the master’s degree is to train level II practitioners who are able to integrate into the preservation and dissemination of tangible and intangible heritage.
Designed in line with the Unesco Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage approved by France on 11 July 2006, this diploma aims to meet two emerging needs of the professional world:
- Heritage conservation and development organizations need staff who are familiar with intangible heritage in the cultural and linguistic dimensions of the regions in which they operate. The programme therefore combines, in an innovative and interdisciplinary way, teachings on material heritage (history, art history, paleography) with teachings on these human realities (language and literature of oc, ethnology and ethnomusicology). The area of study and experimentation preferred is the PACA region, which does not exclude that other French and foreign regions are concerned.
- These organizations need trained staff in presentation, promotion, animation and media. Hence theoretical and practical teaching in these fields (museology, cultural media, archival) provided by professionals, with an extension of the 12-week internship and the tutored project.
A general training (French and foreign language) completes these courses.
