The International Committee on Art History (CIHA) holds its 36th Congress in June 2024. This world-class scientific and cultural meeting aims to share and disseminate research through the gathering of art history and heritage communities around a unifying theme. Created in 1873, this congress is the only truly global event in the field of heritage and art history.
After Beijing, Florence and São Paulo, more than 1,000 speakers will come from more than 70 countries to discuss a current theme, Materiality. Inherent in the design, production, interpretation and preservation of artifacts in all cultures and all eras, these two notions of matter and materiality gave rise to several theoretical challenges in recent decades. This theme therefore offers the opportunity for a fruitful intercultural and interdisciplinary dialogue on issues that promote a transversal perspective at the intersection of approaches and methodologies.
For five days from June 23 to 27, through 93 parallel sessions, communications, round tables, major conferences and meetings will address many techniques and categories of material objects, from painting to print, from architectural productions to the use of waste, from the human body to clothing. The sessions are divided into 14 themes: Thinking Matter; Materials of the Work; The Factory of Art; Economic Factors; Ecology and Politics; Material Anthropology of Work; Imaginary Materials; Dematerialization/Rematerialization; New Materialities; Immateriality/Ephemeral; Patrimonialization; Material History of Objects, History of Conservation; Politics and Ethics of Care.
A book fair will also offer the opportunity to meet French and international authors and publishers.
Finally, visits to the heritage of Lyon and the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes region will be offered on Friday, June 28, 2024.
This congress has a societal dimension: it is held only in person to promote exchanges between disciplines, professions, generations and continents. He is attentive to the concerns of today’s world and it is the Nobel Prize for Literature Orhan Pamuk who will give the inaugural lecture.
This exceptional event, which takes place for the first time in France since 1989, is supported by the Ministries of Culture, Higher Education and Foreign Affairs, local authorities and numerous institutions, national and international.
The program of the event is available in download here or under form detailed here.
