The tomb of the Riou-Aune family, in Châteauneuf-de-Four, stands on a circular hill entirely planted with holm and white oaks. It is accessed by an alley of 12 m wide lined with cypresses, and a stone staircase of 87 steps. The monument, built in 1924 by the architect Roger SEASSAL, at the request of the Riou-Aune spouses, was erected in memory of their son who died in an accident. In 1936, the couple donated the tomb to the municipality, which undertook to maintain it and make no changes, even in the vegetation.
The whole building is clad in white limestone, just like the platform and staircase, it consists of a single block of square plan, whose faces are decorated with tight colonnades, without base or capital. The south face has a gate now walled, whose bronze doors were stolen. The corners are highlighted by pilasters of square section, as sober as the crowning that surmounts them. The roof has the shape of a step pyramid, it consists of superimposed slabs. Originally, it seems that the interior room was decorated on its side faces with sculptures by Paul Landowski. The richness of this monument, its dimensions, and the originality of its forms make it often close to masterpieces of ancient works such as the Mausoleum of Halicarnasse, Pythios, in Greece, one of the seven wonders of the world.
