Need for a library:
Why this project?
In 1989, the project for a multimedia library came in response to the problem of delay in the public reading offer of the city of Cavaillon. The services of the municipal library at the chapel of the Grand Couvent already present in the territory no longer met the demand of readers. Its premises were too small and the collections too small (3000 documents in 1992). The influence and development of this old library proved to be insufficient. This is why a new media library became indispensable within the cultural landscape of the city. Nevertheless, the transition between the chapel of the Grand Convent and the future media library had to be largely worked on. Indeed, it was necessary familiarize audiences with new media, find new users and prove that the media library had multiple missions with information, training, leisure and communication facilities.
Impact :
The Cavaillon Media Library opened to the public in April 1997. In 2006, she became network head media libraries of the Provence-Luberon-Durance community of communes (with Cheval Blanc, Mérindol and Taillades).
This network is a success and continues to grow. Thus, many projects have been carried out such as the development of meeting places and debates ("conference on Fukushima" within the framework of the Science Wednesdays or “What can secularism bring to women in the twenty-first century?” the fortnight of secularism to the media library).
Two services are offered to the public: one service outside the walls with the porting of documents at home and outdoor libraries; a service within the walls with the “story loft” dedicated to early childhood to promote reading on site and a digital space with 7 direct access positions and 6 workshop positions.
In 2012, the Cavaillon Media Library 156,176 documents for almost 17,000 members and 373,241 loans.
The media library makes its music :
In Cavaillon, nearly 16,320 CDs, 740 DVDs, 2,030 musical books, 1,250 scores and 18 musical magazines are offered to the public.
With such a space reserved for music, one of the objectives of the media library is to create a real living place where musical experiences and encounters between artists and amateurs are possible.
In addition, for children, awareness-raising workshops on listening to music are organized, in addition to pedagogical work with school students and collaborations with secondary school teachers.
Finally, the media library tries to work in complementarity with the programming of local scenes in order to accompany certain events.
This is how this cultural place opens up to all music, to all audiences.
