Beaumes-de-Venise - Library
Beaumes-de-Venise 84 190 – Vaucluse Population: 2,415
The town of Beaumes-de-Venise, located close to the Dentelles de Montmirail mountain range, is part of the Ventoux-Comtat-Venaissin (CoVe) agglomeration community. In 2017, she decided to move her public library to a new space that she plans to renovate.
The project to move the public library has proved to be essential to instill a functional, welcoming and attractive dynamic. Access to the building currently housing the library was unsuitable for certain audiences, which was a major obstacle to the development of this service. The aging premises are poorly adapted to the missions pursued and its possibility of hosting remains limited. Due to these constraints, overall attendance remains low.
In order to remedy these problems, the municipality plans to transfer the library to the building currently occupied by the city’s Tourist Office, located at the Maison des Dentelles. This new location is characterized by its proximity to the main services of the municipality. The new premises will be accessible on one level. Parking will be made available to users for greater ease. This will make the library accessible to all audiences.
The architectural project of the library favors modularity to allow each user to move easily in the new premises. For this, the layout of the main room will be characterized by the use of adaptable furniture that can easily be moved as much as needed.
The library will be composed of three main poles, each divided into several spaces. The project envisages a distribution of spaces designed according to different uses. The centre of hospitality and conviviality will include the reception, a coffee and press area and a friendly space located outside. The internal services hub will include additional furniture storage space that can be used for workshops or events.
The Collections, Consulting and Services Centre will be dedicated to literature, creation, learning and exchange. It will include a reading space, a space related to relaxation and meetings, a workspace and a digital space. A projection space and a space hosting exhibitions will also be part of this pole. A baby-reader space and a playful space for the imagination will be offered to children.
In addition, the municipality wishes to enrich the collections of the library. To this end, it plans to update and renew its youth fund, its documentary fund and its books and comic strips for adults.
This project was also undertaken to enable the Beaumes-de-Venise Library to deal with current issues in terms of public reading and access to culture. Programming possibilities are now limited by the library’s limited capacity. The move will allow the service to mobilize the necessary resources to make it possible to welcome more users and to increase its attractiveness.
The library currently supports various avenues of mediation. It focuses on cultural and artistic mediation, digital mediation and “outside the walls” mediation. It thus plans to develop mediation actions around the book, writing and artistic creation by offering workshops of meeting with authors or illustrators, workshops on children’s literature and workshops for the general public to discover and practice artistic activities of all kinds. Shows, exhibitions and screenings can be organized in this context.
Digital mediation is also one of the library’s priorities. It will offer workshops on the discovery of video games and applications, as well as workshops on digital creation to extend its action in this field.
It also plans to reinforce its various mediation actions «outside the walls» aimed at so-called prevented and distant audiences. It thus wishes to encourage access to reading for these audiences by promoting a regularly renewed selection of works in visible and attractive “easy to read” points. The library also provides for the organization of meeting times and administrative assistance for these audiences.
The Beaumes-de-Venise Library also wants to strengthen its mediation activities with the target groups defined as priorities. For this purpose, she plans to carry out projects with the young public, integrating the school and children of the town’s recreation centre. The children of the crib will be welcomed each week in a group to allow them to approach the book and reading in its various forms.
The library also plans to implement actions for families, including parent-child workshops, meetings of authors and illustrators, and conferences. It will continue to carry out actions in partnership with the municipal retirement home by proposing projects and computer discovery workshops.
The municipal library is a key element of the municipality’s cultural policy. It is now part of the network formed by the 16 libraries of the CoVe. This network promotes the realization of a common project within the territory, articulated around public reading, through the promotion of books and writing.
The library of Beaumes-de-Venise marks a real desire to establish itself in the local cultural, educational and associative life. It plans to continue developing its partnerships with the various actors present in the municipality.
The transformation of the library aims more broadly at achieving a coherent service, in line with the expectations and needs of the greatest number. By adapting its offer and its spaces to different audiences, the library wishes to carry out its objectives in order to actively contribute to the social inclusion and educational success of everyone. The relocated and renovated library will revitalize the local area, providing a place for intergenerational and friendly encounters and discovery, as well as an accessible and functional local service.
