Know and study
Located at the heart of the service, this mission is divided into three areas.
Coordinate and administer research
The service conducts the State’s policy of detection and study of the regional heritage of interest to archaeology. It is assisted by an independent advisory body, the Interregional Commission for Archaeological Research | CIRA composed of researchers from all walks of life and competent on all scientific questions concerning archaeology. It provides scientific control of archaeological operations authorized (scheduled operations) or decided (preventive operations) by the State. It coordinates regional policy in the field of archaeological research, in conjunction with the public institutions of the sector (CNRS, universities, Inrap, local authorities). It prepares, instructs and monitors the annual planning of scientific, administrative and budgetary research.
Develop and update archaeological inventory
The "archaeological map" collects and orders available data relating to heritage of interest to archaeology. The service feeds for this purpose a national database (Patriarch) which, for each site surveyed, provides topographical information (common, place-said, coordinates...) archaeological (vestiges, dating...) administrative (protection, excavations carried out...) and references of sources (bibliography, surveys...). In constant evolution, this archaeological inventory restores a state of knowledge of the territory. It is both a research and a wealth management tool.
Contribute to archaeological research
Most of the service’s archaeologists (curators, engineers and research technicians) are involved in the research movement, particularly in the framework offered by the CNRS joint research units, notably theUMR 5608-Traces in Toulouse and theUMR 5140 ASM in Montpellier.
