Regional Archaeological Service (SRA) of Hauts-de-France
The Regional Department of Archaeology (SRA) is responsible for implementing the State policy on archaeology in the Hauts-de-France. Its mission is to inventory, study, protect, conserve and promote the regional archaeological heritage.
"All the remains and other traces of the existence of humanity, including the safeguarding and study, in particular by excavations or discoveries, constitute elements of the archaeological heritage, help trace the development of human history and its relationship with the natural environment.” art. L - 510-1 of the Heritage Code.
The Regional Archaeological Service, headed by a regional curator of archaeology, is composed of archaeologists (curators, research or study engineers, assistant engineers and research technicians) and administrative officers, spread over the two DRAC sites in Lille and Amiens.
Inventory and study
The risk assessment of development projects is based on archaeological map which gathers all the information about the known archaeological sites through prospecting, incidental discoveries, excavations, bibliographic analysis and archival studies. The Regional Archaeological Service examines the authorizations for operation and ensures their scientific control.
At the regional level, it coordinates theprogrammed archaeology, in consultation with the Territorial Commission for Archaeological Research (CTRA) Centre-Nord. Archaeologists from the Regional Archaeological Service also participate in joint research units (UMR) of the CNRS bringing together researchers from different backgrounds around a curriculum.
Protect and preserve
The SFA ensures the protection of archaeological heritage based on regulations. It participates in the instruction of development authorizations: when archaeological remains are likely to be reached, preventive archaeology are prescribed. He is also responsible for the proper preservation of archaeological movable property (BAM) and excavation archives.
Promote and value
Finally, the SRA organizes, leads and supports, in particular financially, the research valorisation and the dissemination of its results, notably through publications. It is also involved in the many actions aimed at the public to make them discover the results of regional research.
Partners
To carry out all these missions, the SRA works closely with all the scientists, volunteers and professionals involved in the field of regional archaeology. They are particularly numerous in the Hauts-de-France with more than 500 professionals mainly attached to theNational Institute for Preventive Archaeological Research (INRAP), to archaeological services of local authorities, to accredited private operators and some others to the CNRS and the University.
Within the DRAC, the Regional Archaeological Service is part of the Heritage and Architecture Pole and works with other services competent in heritage protection, such as the Regional conservation of historic monuments (CRMH) and the Departmental Architecture and Heritage Units (UDAP) who participate in the promotion of heritage, architectural and urban quality, the conservation and enhancement of the built heritage, as well as with the Museum advisors.
