Crowdfunding or crowdfunding
Commonly known as 'crowdfunding' (literally 'crowdfunding'), what is known in France as crowdfunding is a form of patronage that allows project promoters (whatever the nature), through the almost exclusive internet, In 2014, the DRAC entrusted a study to a Master 2 student at the University of Lorraine. These are the elements of her research that serve as the basis for this restitution, also downloadable in its full version.

In France, crowdfunding totals 78.3 million in 2013
The Île-de-France, Rhône-Alpes and Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur regions are the most dynamic in this area.
Among the best-known French generalist platforms are:
kisskissbankbank.com, ulule.com, mymajorcompany.com.
But some are more specialized. For example: touscoprod.com (cinema) or sandawe.com (comic).
Others have decided, to stand out, to make their approach more qualitative:
– www.proarti.fr
– www.octoo.com
– www.culture-time.com
– www.pickandboost.com
– www.microcultures.com
In exchange for their services (which range from advice to secure payment), they take a
The commission varies between 5 and 10 % of the amount collected, but only if the project is successful. If the project does not succeed, no fees are levied and the amounts paid by the donors are refunded in full.
Information for project promoters
The project leader must select the internet platform best able to meet his expectations and the characteristics of his project.
Before preparing the complete file to be deposited on the platform according to different requirements from one site to another, it is often necessary to become a member.
Some platforms highlight selection criteria such as the artistic quality of the project and the fact that it is carried by professional artists. Others accept all the projects, but they are submitted to the vote of the users and if the project reaches 150 votes, the fundraising can begin.
As a minimum requirement, sites require project sponsors to be major.
Then the project is reviewed by the site, 1/3 of the applications is rejected.
For the project to work, particular attention must be paid to:
- the title of the project;
- the project description;
- the budget;
- duration of collection (maximum 90 days);
▪ develop a communications plan;
▪ mobilize your personal and professional network as well as the «fans» which requires a good mastery of social networks;
▪ Surround yourself with partners and “sponsors”: structures, associations, who can help communicate about projects and find patrons;
▪ be in possession of a performance contractor licence, in the case of a live performance project;
▪ Think about the compensation that can be offered to contributors.
The donation in 'participatory patronage' can be the subject of two types of possible compensation, at the option of the project leader:
- one in kind (derivatives, CDs, concert tickets, etc...), which can take a lot of time for the project leader to think about it beforehand;
- the other in cash (participation in any benefits).
▪ Include in the budget the percentage donated to the platform.
Since 'participatory patronage' implies an emotional link between the donor and the project promoter, it is essential to maintain this link in the collection process.
A very time-consuming project communication work is necessary during the funding search phase.
Once sent to the platform, the project itself (object, budget, etc.) can no longer be modified.
It is also advisable on some sites to have the support of a sponsor, who will guarantee the quality of the project.
Upon acceptance, the project is put online. Attention, it is not because it is accepted that it will obtain the expected funding. Despite this, overall there has been an increase in the success rate.
Information for contributors
The choice for a contributor to participate in the financing of a project starts in principle from the desire to accompany this project and not to make financial profits, which if they exist will anyway be very thin.
Not all platforms offer opportunities for benefits.
On most sites, contributors are individuals, businesses and associations. On the site proarti.fr, contributors can also be local and territorial authorities. The maximum amounts of contributions vary from platform to platform. Each contributor may, until the project is closed, increase or decrease its contribution.
A contributor can sometimes benefit from a counterpart (non-financial). It varies depending on the type of project and is proportional to the amount of the donation (derived products: key ring, badge, bag, etc. , album, signed script, tickets...
For the time being, in most cases, it is not possible to obtain a tax receipt allowing a 66% tax deduction for individual contributors. But if the supported project is eligible for the tax deduction, it is the project holder’s duty to send the necessary receipts to obtain the deduction on the tax return. Some platforms support the issuance of tax receipts for donors, if they have supported a project eligible for the tax deduction.
