Archaeology in the Great East
Within the DRAC, the Regional Archaeological Service is responsible for inventorying, protecting, studying, conserving and enhancing the archaeological heritage of the region. It programmes and monitors scientific research in the regions and disseminates the results.
Archaeological heritage is a fragile, limited and non-renewable resource, of which archaeologists know only part.
Because of its fragility, the state has organized its protection by law and controls research.
At the regional level, the Regional Directorate for Cultural Affairs, via the Regional Archaeological Service, ensures the application of legislation relating to archaeology.
The service, organised at the 3 sites of the DRAC Grand Est, in Strasbourg, Châlons-en-Champagne and Metz, prescribes, in liaison with the interregional committee for archaeological research (CIRA), diagnoses and preventive searches, investigates requests for authorization of searches, monitors and controls their execution.

Role and missions of the Regional Archaeological Service
Back up
The Regional Archaeology Service (SRA) prescribes and controls thepreventive archaeology (diagnosis and excavations), made necessary by spatial planning operations and implemented by various authorised operators.
The protection of sites and remains is the constant concern of the SRA, which systematically intervenes in the treatment of urban planning documents and land urbanization requests and also studies the impact of development and major works: highway development, rail network, BIA, etc.
Study
The department is responsible for coordinating all research activity in the region.
It instructs the authorizations of scheduled excavations, collective search programs and issue specific rescue or survey authorizations.
Inventory and keep
The service draws up the regional archaeological map, records the fortuitous discoveries, ensures the conservation of the documentation resulting from the excavations (archives of excavations, archaeological furniture)... It manages the Conservation and Study Centres where are deposited the archives of excavations and archaeological furniture inventoried.
Promote
The service ensures the dissemination and promotion of research.
This policy is divided into several specific or permanent actions (exhibitions, European Archaeology and Heritage Days, publications, congresses, seminars) and is characterized by a willingness to collaborate with all regional partners.
