The ten-year renewal of the conventions Cities and countries of art and history is one of the priorities of the Ministry of Culture. The approach makes it possible to take stock of the actions implemented, in the direction of the inhabitants, the young public, the tourists.
The label rewards territories that engage in an active approach of knowledge, conservation, mediation and support to the creation and architectural quality and living environment to promote ownership by the inhabitants...
This commitment is part of a cultural, social and economic development perspective.
The implementation of the label is based on a partnership between the State and local authorities. The award of the label is formalized by the signing of a ten-year agreement of objectives and means. The actions are developed in close collaboration with DRAC Grand Est.
Mulhouse: labeled since 2009

Allied with the Swiss cantons until 1798, the city of Mulhouse is rich in a natural and real estate heritage preserved from the Middle Ages until the XXIe century. The textile industry has shaped the city and made it its specificity.
Since 2009, when it was labeled City of Art and History, Mulhouse has implemented a local urban planning plan, two remarkable heritage sites (Franklin and Central Cemetery) and has promoted various actions to improve the quality of life, as the valorization of industrial architecture end XIXe early XXe centuries, thanks to renovations or requalifications and that of contemporary architecture through many creations.
The city also established an Architecture and Heritage Interpretation Centre in 2016. It offers educational workshops, temporary exhibitions, guided tours, educational tools (games, brochures...).
The objectives of the new art and history convention
The city will continue and expand the work already done in the implementation of the new convention.
The label meets two major objectives which are:
- contribute to promoting the identity and singularity of Mulhouse as a key to understanding a territory in metamorphosis;
- be a lever to develop a sense of belonging and encourage people to become actors in this changing environment.
The city is committed to:
- develop public policy: in particular the young public, the public in the priority neighbourhoods of the city’s policy and the disabled public;
- strengthen arts and cultural education actions within the framework of the future Territorial Contract for Arts and Cultural Education under development;
- Increase the visibility of the Centre d’interprétation de l’architecture et du patrimoine and of the service’s activities and develop its notoriety among residents and tourists;
- strengthen the human resources of the City of Art and History Service;
- strengthen the transversality of the service within the city and with the Tourist Office.
