This collective work to be published Dominique Carré/ The Discovery, illustrates the action taken by the Ministry of Culture for many years in favour of a quality housing architecture.
It is part of the policy of the Ministry of Culture and the extension of the law of 7 July 2016 on the freedom of creation, architecture and heritage that integrates measures ranging from the valorization of recent and contemporary architecture to intervention, made mandatory by professionals of landscape, urban planning and architecture beyond a certain threshold, to establish the architectural, landscape and environmental project of a subdivision.
Often left on the margins of the great French urban history, individual housing represents in France a quarter of the production of new housing. The book presents many operations carried out under the impetus of the public authorities, from the experiments of the post-war period or the mass production of the Thirty Glorious to the most recent operations that try to reinvent the pavilion model. The 92 ensembles gathered in this book, show the great variety of forms and uses of this architecture, whose appearance at times ordinary, yet testifies to the continuous invention of contemporary forms of housing.
On the occasion of the release of this book, the Directorate General of Heritage of the Ministry of Culture organizes on Monday, June 26 at the Cité de l'architecture et du patrimoine, a colloquium entitled The subdivisions, Challenges of architectural, urban and landscape quality in the grouped individual housing.
Architects, landscape architects, urban planners, planners, communities, researchers and teachers, ministries and institutions, will discuss this theme. The major challenge is to combine the challenges of housing demand for all with the search for a quality of construction and living environment in each territory and solutions compatible with the preservation of the environment and resources.
With this publication and colloquium the Ministry of Culture confirms its commitment to the quality of the living environment and poses as an essential challenge the knowledge, recognition and enhancement of the architectural heritage of the twentieth century.
