Last vestige of the fortifications of the city-port elevated in the fourteenth century, the Lieutenance is a complex set of buildings built around the old gate of Caen which gave access to a fortified enclosure, surrounded by ditches, and reduced to a small harbour village.
Reshaped over the centuries its present appearance is that of the aggregation of at least seven elements each recalling one of the functions, military or administrative, that the building has had over the centuries.
Architectural and Heritage Interpretation Centre
Designed in conjunction with the city’s other cultural facilities, the Architecture and Heritage Interpretation Centre aims to raise awareness, inform and train all audiences in the architecture and heritage of the territory.
The scenography of the exhibition spaces presents the interdependent development of the port and urban environment and the Lieutenance, the opening of the port to the outside and the urban organization of the city.
It is designed to offer an immersive and active tour that is open to everyone, through audio stories, virtual re-enactments, models, manipulation games, videos, etc.
The artist residence
It is located on the first floor and in the attic of the building, and hosts from April to October artists in residence.
The mission of the residence is to give artistic resonance to maritime heritage, promote artistic exchanges, raise awareness and encourage artistic practices. Artists (visual artists, writers, photographers, musicians, etc.) will be welcomed part of the year.
