Writing for the street 2024, assistance to writing residencies for the Public Space

Objectives of the scheme 

• Recognize the singularity of writing for the public space and the authors/designers who embody it.
• Provide financial support to authors/designers during the writing phase.
• Promote these approaches in places and with partners who will continue these projects until their completion.
• Encourage innovative approaches, with expanded artistic encounters, taking into account the issues related to public space.

A maximum of ten projects are selected per year. The application of authors or artistic directors must be accompanied by a reception structure, place of creation in particular for the public space.

Proposed support

• A writing aid paid to authors by the SACD, in the amount of €1,000 per winning project. 
• Assistance to support the writing process paid by the Ministry of Culture, in the amount of € 5,700 per winning project. 

Support from ARTCENA, resulting in an advisory meeting on the development of the winners' productions and their participation in presentations of creative projects co-organized by ARTCENA and SACD.

In particular, the financial assistance supports:

• The remuneration of authors and artistic collaborators involved in the writing project.
• The documentary research preceding the writing phase.
• Possible travel expenses for tracking, documentary material.
• Collaborations with other resource persons from any disciplinary field in order to deepen and enrich the project.

Eligibility criteria

• Is eligible for the «Ecrire pour la rue» scheme, any artistic writing project for the public space carried by street arts authors, like other artistic disciplines wishing to invest the public space. 
• The submitted project must provide for an original writing, and not the adaptation or transposition for the public space of a pre-existing work.  
• The author applying for the scheme must submit, in his file at the time he applies, a letter attesting to the commitment of a place to host him in the event that he obtains the scholarship. The place in question is not necessarily a «recognized» Arts de la Rue place. 
• The writing process that underpins the request for support for «Ecrire pour la rue» must be well upstream of the production phase. This aid should not be considered as support for production, even in its initial phase, but as an accompaniment to the writing process, taking into account the specific needs induced by an original approach to the public space and the relationship with the public.
• The submitted project must provide for the artistic or dramaturgical collaboration of a third-party artist (not specifically from the street arts sector) who will bring a cross-look to the author on his project, allowing him to deepen his writing process.  
• The «Ecrire pour la Rue» grants are paid to legally constituted structures with a SIRET number and a valid performance contractor’s licence.

2023 Winners

The advisory committee of the "Ecrire pour la rue" mechanism met on 8 June 2023 to designate 10 selected projects, among 79 applications.
