This note measures the economic situation of the market field of culture in the first quarter of 2023, as reflected in the trend in the indices of turnover by sector derived from VAT returns made by enterprises to the Directorate-General for Public Finance.
In the first quarter of 2023, revenue in the market cultural sectors rose by 1.64 billion euros, an increase of 8% in value and 4% in volume:
- Activity levels of sectors directly related to cultural outings what are the film screening (+48%) on live performance merchant (+33%) and the asset management (+23%) strong growth in the first quarter of 2023 compared to the first quarter of 2022, as well as the visual arts (+19%) and the recorded music (+15%).
- Only two cultural sectors recorded a significant year-on-year decline in revenues : the video game (-21%, following a first quarter 2022 increase of 18% year-on-year) and the radio (-5%, following a 12% year-on-year increase in the first quarter of 2022). press is stable (- 0.7%).
In relation to 2019 and the pre-crisis situation, the market field of culture recorded in the first quarter of 2023 an increase in its turnover of 14% in value and 8% in volume:
- This positive gap is drawn first through the contribution of the visual arts (4.6 percentage points), audiovisual and cinema (3.8 percentage points) and, to a lesser extent, film live commercial show (1.9 point).
- Only the press, film projection and radio posted in the first quarter of 2023 a turnover below its pre-crisis value (-7%, -6% and -5%, respectively).
