Archives security
Archives represent a target exposed to malicious acts, including degradation and theft.
As stated in the Instruction of 27 November 2002 on Document Security and Theft Prevention in Public Archives, the design and management of archival buildings must take into account the security concerns of the documents to be kept.
The security of an archive building requires the implementation of coherent and comprehensive measures of mechanical protection, electronic equipment, including anti-intrusion detection, as well as organizational and human resources.
Information and awareness among staff on the prevention of theft and malicious acts are necessary to safeguard the archival heritage, a fragile and irreplaceable cultural asset
The Interdepartmental Service of the Archives of France reissues the manual on Security of archival heritage. This manual proposes a comprehensive approach to the protection of archival heritage against theft and malevolence and sets out a number of guiding principles for the establishment and implementation of such a policy. It was drafted to help the various stakeholders (archivists, architects, etc.), at the request of the Archives de France and in collaboration with them, by Yann Brun, a specialist in security within the Ministry of Culture.
Its first edition was published in December 2014. Most of the update provided by this second edition concerns the Vigipirate plan and various updates relating to the heritage code and the penal code.
