Preserve cellulose nitrate media
Working group "Preserving cellulose nitrate media" convened since November 2014 under the auspices of the Photography Mission of the Ministry of Culture.
Since November 2014, under the aegis of the Photography Mission of the Ministry of Culture a working group brought together professionals dealing with the preservation and processing of photographic and cinematographic supports in cellulose nitrate, the first artificial polymer used in the manufacture of photographic supports since 1875, then cinematographic.
Among all the supports preserved, cellulose nitrate supports are those that generate in professionals the most apprehension and fears.
To take stock of these issues, exchange on professional practices, deepen and enrich knowledge, inform and debate on the news of research, scientists, professionals of preventive conservation, archivists and managers of film and photographic collections dealing with this issue have joined the working group Maintain nitrate media cellulose.
Their main objective: to answer the questions raised by the conservation of this type of media, to propose solutions and to design tools for monitoring and control of collections, adapted to their nature and volume.
Together, they developed a collection of practical sheets for agents responsible for implementing the conservation and management of such sets. These sheets are available on this page.
